Is blurred vision hiding Jesus right in front of you?

Is Blurred Vision Hiding Jesus Right in Front of You?

Have you ever noticed how often the color red grabs your attention? Marketers know we make snap judgments quickly, and color plays a powerful role. Red creates urgency, stimulates appetite, and stands out against the ordinary crowd.

In much the same way, we tend to notice what we’re already looking for. And that truth sets the stage for a remarkable story in Luke 24, where two disciples walk with the risen Jesus— yet fail to recognize Him.

On the road to Emmaus, these followers are deep in conversation about recent events when Jesus Himself joins them. “But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.” (Luke 24:16). Their problem wasn’t proximity—it was perception. They knew the facts: Jesus’ miracles, His crucifixion, even the report of the empty tomb. Yet they confessed, “We had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel.” (Luke 24:21). Disappointment clouded their vision, and doubt sealed it.

Sound familiar? When expectations crumble and questions pile up, it’s easy to miss what God is doing right in front of us. These disciples even drifted away from the fellowship of believers—another subtle clue to their blurred vision.

Jesus responds not with a dramatic reveal, but with Scripture. “Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27). These scriptures showed them that everything Jesus had just endured was part of God’s plan. The message is clear: God’s Word brings clarity when life feels confusing.

As Jesus starts to leave, they urge Him to stay. He joins them at the table. “He took the bread and blessed and broke it… and their eyes were opened.” (Luke 24:30–31). Suddenly, what was hidden becomes unmistakable. Their hearts had already been stirring—“Did not our hearts burn within us… while he opened to us the Scriptures?” (Luke 24:32)—but now their vision is fully restored.

How does that happen for us? The same way it did for them: through Scripture, by inviting His presence, and through fellowship. Jesus didn’t force Himself on them—He waited to be welcomed. And when they made room for Him, everything changed. That’s still true today. When we open the Bible, invite Christ into our daily lives, and gather with other believers, we begin to see clearly again.

So, what are you looking for? Like a hummingbird drawn to bright red feeders, you will find what you seek. If you search for disappointment, you’ll find plenty. But if you look for Christ—through His Word, His presence, and His people—He will stand out unmistakably.

If you’re ready to sharpen your vision, you’ll find a place to do just that at LECC, 415897 Highway 9, Eufaula: small group Bible study at 10 a.m., worship at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., plus Wednesday night all-age activities. Come looking for Him and watch how clearly He comes into view as you walk your own road to Emmaus.

God Bless You!
