What’s up at Allsup’s?

JERRY FINK

MANAGING EDITOR

Six months after ground was broken for an Allsup’s Market at the northwest corner of SH 9 and Eunice Burns Drive the store opened at 5:30 a.m., Thursday, April 24.

Almost immediately, droves of drivers began arriving to check out the scene of the 6,277 square foot store and gas station.

“It’s one of our largest,” said Project Manager Jason Dockey, who now heads to El Reno where another Allsup’s is being built.

Still another will soon be opening at Krebbs, Dockey said.

There are more than a dozen Allsup’s in Oklahoma, whose stores are primarily located in New Mexico, Texas

Staff welcomes customers to the opening of the latest Allsup’s Market on SH9 at U.S. 69 in Eufaula. Front row left is Charmaine Scott, manager of the Eufaula store, front row right is Stormie Messenger, manager of an Allsup’s that will open in Krebbs; back row left is Jason Dokey, Project Manager; and back row right is Wendell Page, District Manager.

Allsup’s is owned by Yesway, which is part of BW Gas & Convenience Holdings LLC, based in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Allsup’s was created in Roswell, N.M., in 1956 by Lonnie and Barbara Allsup. At its founding, it was called Lonnie’s Drive-In Market.

According to company press releases, it was a predecessor to modern day convenience stores and the first to have self-service gas.

Allsup created a chain of Drive-In Markets which he sold to 7-Eleven in 1963 and started the Allsup’s Convenience Store chain.

The chain sold to Yesway in 2019 and eventually joined BW Gas & Convenience Holdings LLC.

Yesway has more than 400 stores in Texas, New Mexico, South Dakota, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Wyoming, Nebraska and Oklahoma, according to the company’s website.

The local store is managed by Charmaine Scott.

Conveniently located at U.S. 69 and S.H. 9, Allsup’s has the usual products available at most convenience stores as well as its own name-brand products.

It boasts of having Allsup’s World Famous Burritos.
