A McIntosh County man was arrested April 16 on a complaint of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Steven Wayne Smith, 54, of Checotah, was taken into custody about 1:37 a.m. at a resi-dence in McIntosh County.
According to the affidavit, a deputy with the McIntosh County Sheriff ’s Office responded April 15 to a reported domestic disturbance at the residence.
A woman told authorities she and Smith had been arguing and that he had been drinking. She said Smith yelled at her, became aggressive and struck her multiple times, including in the chest and face, and choked her. She reported difficulty breathing and pain in her chest.
The deputy observed redness and swelling on the woman’s face and chest and multiple abrasions on her arms and hands, the affidavit states.
According to the report, the woman left the residence and went to a neighbor’s home. She also told authorities there were multiple firearms in the home and that Smith had made statements about wanting to die.
While attempting to locate Smith, the deputy identified a vehicle matching the description provided by the woman. When the deputy activated emergency lights and sirens, the vehicle fled.
According to the report, authorities said Smith drove to his residence, refused commands to exit the vehicle and later ran toward the home. Deputies pursued him, and a Taser deployment was unsuccessful. Smith was taken into custody after a physical struggle.
A search found a pocket knife in Smith’s pants, according to the affidavit.
Emergency medical personnel treated Smith for injuries, including a head wound, and transported him to a hospital for clearance before booking, records show.
Authorities reported damage to a sheriff ’s office vehicle during the incident.
Smith was later booked into the McIntosh County Sheriff ’s Office, and the case was submitted to the district attorney’s office for review.
