The Capitol is full of energy as we approach another key legislative deadline. This week, House oversight committees are diligently working through a large volume of Senate bills that must be heard before the cutoff. Only the proposals that make it through this committee stage will be eligible for debate and a vote on the House floor.
As we enter the final stretch of session, each deadline plays a critical role in shaping which policies move forward and which ones are set aside. It’s a reminder of the imp ortance of staying focused, efficient and committed to advancing legislation that reflects Oklahoma values.
As I have stated recently there have been serious funding challenges for the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS). To address the concerns, Speaker Kyle Hilbert has formed a special committee to thoroughly investigate the department’s finances. With just weeks remaining in session, it’s clear we still don’t have a full picture of the agency’s true funding needs. This hearing process is critical to uncover what’s happened and, more importantly, to ensure proper oversight and responsible budgeting going forward.
My colleagues and I remain committed to passing a fiscally responsible, conservative budget that protects taxpayer dollars while ensuring that essential services are delivered with accountability and efficiency.
In other Capitol news, on April 14, we gathered in a joint session to remember the lives lost in the tragic bombing of April 19, 1995. It was a solemn reminder of the evil we’ve faced and the strength we’ve shown in its aftermath. The Oklahoma Standard—rooted in faith, community and service—continues to define who we are. We are a people who stand strong, love our neighbors and never forget.
Easter Sunday has come and gone, but the message of the Resurrection lives on. He is Risen—what a powerful reminder of God’s enduring goodness, mercy and grace. As we navigate the challenges of our time, let us hold fast to the truth that through Christ, we are called to love one another, serve with humility, and keep our hearts open to His will.
