Verdigris sweeps Wildcats on the baseball diamond

The Checotah Wildcats (1-5) had a tough start to the baseball season as they fell to Verdigris 21-2 on Monday. The Wildcats are looking to improve from their 10-21 record from last season.

Verdigris jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first inning scoring three runs, and laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring one run. Verdigris added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning by adding two more runs.

Verdigris scored eight runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Charles Collins started on the mound for Checotah Varsity Wildcats (1). The hurler gave up eight hits and 11 runs (four earned) over two innings, striking out two and walking three. M West led things off on the hill for Verdigris. The pitcher surrendered three hits and one run over three innings, striking out six and walking three.

Jim Rainbolt led Checotah Varsity Wildcats (1) with one run batted in. The outfielder went 1-for-2 on the day. Logan Crawford went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead Checotah Varsity Wildcats (1) in hits.

Verdigris accumulated 11 hits in the game and made zero errors.

Checotah lost 2-4 in game two Monday.

On Tuesday, Checotah fell to Verdigris 10-6 even with eight hits by the Wildcats. Verdigris scored twice in the first inning on errors committed by the Wildcats. Checotah would take a 3-2 lead after Logan Crawford hit a single to center and Jim Rainbolt singled down the left field line.

Charles Collins extended the lead in the second inning with a single to center and an error by Verdigris. The Cardinals scored five runs in the sixth inning on two hits to take a 9-6 lead. In the seventh, Grant Hastings hit a solo home run to seal the victory 10-6. Mason Rainbolt started on the mound for the Wildcats. He allowed one hit and four runs over four innings, striking out eight and walking five. Crawford led the team at the plate going 2-for-4.

Checotah lost to Jay 9-4 on Saturday. Logan Crawford of the Wildcats was solid at the plate for Checotah and put the Wildcats on the board in the first inning. Jay committed an error that allowed Checotah to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

Jay would take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Jay would score three runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 9-2 lead. The Wildcats would score two runs in the seventh but it would prove to be too late for the Wildcats as Jay won the game 9-4.

Crawford led Checotah at the plate going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Charles Collins was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Dallas Carter 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Jay ended the game with 10 hits. Dalton Carter took the loss for Checotah at the pitcher’s mound. He gave up five hits and six runs over three innings, striking out five and walking three.
