Monday at the Capitol was Department of Corrections Day. We were able to see the men and women working hard to keep our state safe by assuring that our inmates are safe.

Their job is daunting and tasking, but as legislators we have their back and will continue to help keep them and the offenders in their custody safe.

Alongside our dedicated corrections officials were many groups that work to help those coming out of jail or prison to get the education or the job training they need so they can find employment. Other groups help get people free from addiction and help them find housing and ways to safely reconnect with family. It was gratifying to see these groups working together to help restore people who are willing to earn a second chance.

Also last week, the House Appropriations & Budget Committee passed a resolution approving a consent decree between the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and plaintiffs who brought action against the state in the matter of several county jail inmates.

The plaintiffs are arguing that efforts to restore competency to these inmates have not been administered in a timely enough manner by the department. As our county jail officials lack the training and background to provide complex mental health services to these individuals, it’s left them in a bind.

This agreement would speed the process to help these individuals achieve competency so they can face trial to be held accountable for their actions. This will help victims’ families see justice served but will provide those with true mental health needs the services they are due.

Also this week, I passed several of my bills through their first committees. They now move to oversight committees. Each bill will help us better protect the public. I’ve detailed these bills in prior columns and will provide further information as they are scheduled to be heard on the House floor.
