Muldrow rolls to 70-42 win over Checotah
By Rodney Haltom sports EDITOR

The Muldrow Bulldogs topped the Checotah Wildcats 70-42 on Tuesday at the Checotah Event Center. The Bulldogs started fast, outscoring the Wildcats’ 21-6 in the first period. Tyler Orman and Cole Rolland were the only Wildcats that scored in the opening period. The lack of passing to the open man and ball control plagued Checotah.

Checotah (2-17) began to make some plays in the second period as R.J. Womack and Rowan Chapman hit threepointers and Rolland scored from the free throw line. Muldrow attacked the goal and as the Wildcats began to focus on that, the Bulldogs would swing out to the perimeter and hit long shots.

Teagan Collins scored 17 of his 24 points in the first half and led his team to a 38-25 lead at halftime.

The Wildcats failed to switch up offensively and were outscored 19-10 in the third period. It was obvious that Muldrow used their athleticism to control the game. Checotah battled back with Chapman, Womack and Aum Patel grabbing rebounds while Tyler Orman and Tyler Corn forced turnovers. However, the Wildcats offense broke down as the Bulldogs made adjustments and played tight defense on Dylan Robinson, Wes Brown and Hudson Pollard, forcing turnovers that turned into points for Muldrow.

Foolish turnovers posed a huge factor in the Wildcats downfall in the final period as they committed multiple turnovers in the fourth period alone.

Patel had great effort in the fourth period as he made a steal and scored to make it a 65-37 game. Patel then grabbed another rebound but missed the shot. One possession later Chapman made a steal, passed it to Brown for a score. The Bulldogs then scored twice but Traegan Duvall shot a successful three-pointer as the horn blew ending the game 70-42.

Chapman led Checotah with 10 points, Orman nine points, Rolland eight points and Pollard added five points.

The Bulldogs had three players finish in double-digit scoring with Teagan Collins leading all scorers with 24 points.

The Checotah Lady Wildcats (11-9) watched as the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs used a strong first period to set the tone in a 40-27 victory. Muldrow outscored Checotah 14-7 in the opening period. London Hardie scored seven of her 17 total points in the period. The Lady Wildcats struggled against the Bulldogs defensive efforts.

Senior Sidney Hamilton gave Checotah a spark when she hit a three-point bucket and Shyanne Madewell scored from the free throw line. However, turnovers were the difference in the ballgame as Muldrow frustrated Checotah into making poor decisions passing the ball. The second period was as ugly as a game could be. Both teams combined for six total points. Muldrow went into the halftime break with a 18-9 lead.

The Lady Wildcats came out shooting in the third period as four different players put points on the scoreboard. Jaz Atkins scored a contested three-point shot and Ruthy Folkner, Madewell and Logan Dowdy each scored from the free throw line to cut the lead 25-17.

Muldrow began to pull away in the fourth period on the heels of Hardie and Kilah Ellinberg who combined for 10 of Muldrow’s 15 points. The Lady Bulldogs finished with two players in double figures while holding Checotah players to zero points in double figures. Shyanne Madewell led Checotah with six points, Atkins and Hamilton each scored five points, Hailey Prince four points and Dowdy added three points.

London Hardie finished with 17 points and Kilah Ellinberg added 12 points in the victory.

In Friday’s action the Roland Lady Rangers cruised to a 59-21 win over the Checotah Lady Wildcats. The loss bumps Checotah to an 11-10 record. Roland outscored Checotah 22-5 in the first period and led 32-8 at halftime.

Ryanne Nelke led all scorers with 19 points and Julianna Trujillo had 14 points in the win. Hailey Prince led Checotah with eight points and Ruby Folkner had five points in the losing effort.

Rangers soar over Checotah 72-45. It was an exciting game to start as both teams combined for 33 first period points. But the Wildcats (2-18) had no answer for Damonte Owens who scored 32 points on the Wildcats. R.J. Womack and Rowan Chapman played a physical game as both battled Roland’s big men for rebounds on both ends of the court.

The Wildcats struggled moving the ball up-court as turnovers again played a factor in the loss.

Roland was strong to the end of the game where they outscored the Wildcats 42-18 in the second half. Rowan Chapman led Checotah with 19 points, R.J. Womack eight points, Tyler Orman six points and Aum Patel finished with five points.
