The Checotah Lady Wildcats started the season with a dominating 4123 performance over the Poteau Lady Pirates. Shyanne Madewell led the team with 13 points in a total team effort. Checotah head coach Wes Cloud saw his team play great defense as Ruby Folkner, Logan Dowdy and Jazlyn Atkins frustrated Poteau by forcing shots and turnovers. The Checotah forwards of Hailey Prince and Sidney Hamilton played well in the paint and at times on the perimeter.
Checotah scored 16 points in both the second and third periods while holding Poteau to just 10 points in those periods. Point guard Kami Hamm did a great job coming for Madewell as Hamm scored 8 points in the game. A big surprise was Sidney Hamilton shooting three-pointers in which she made two in the third period to give her team a big lead. Cloud put in his relief players in the fourth period as Checotah held on to win 41-23.
“I’m so proud of the game we played tonight. The effort the girls gave tonight was extremely good. I’m very proud of them,” Checotah head coach Cloud said.
In the boys’ action Checotah (0-1) started off fast by falling victim to Poteau as the Pirates battled back to defeat Checotah 47-39. Checotah outscored Poteau 10-4 in the first period with great play in the paint by R.J. Womack and Rowan Chapman. However, the second period was more exciting as both teams exchanged hard and contested shots with the Pirates outscoring Checotah 15-13.
In the second half, the defensive effort given by Hudson Pollard, Womack, Chapman and Tyler Orman was to be commendable. However, Garrison Whitforth and Riyder Waddell of Poteau began to dominate the rebounds on both ends of the court and they made their foul shots when they went to the line. That was the difference in the ballgame.
Haskell Tournament Scores
Checotah Boys clawed their way to a 67-37 win over Jay. Tyler Orman went off, scoring 26 points while Aum Patel and Rowan Chapman each scored 12 points in a game in which Checotah was never in trouble of losing. R.J. Womack added 6 points and Hudson Pollard finished with 4 points.
The Lady Wildcats defeated Jay 44-37. Ruby Folkner had a big day on both ends of the court, scoring 12 points to lead the team. Shyanne Madewell added 11 points and Sideny Hamilton and Hailey Prince each had 6 points.
On Friday the Checotah Lady Wildcats topped Haskell 59-35. Checotah had four players in double figures as Hailey Prince had 14, Shyanne Madewell 11, Logan Dowdy 10 and Ruby Folkner had 12 points.
In boys action, Wagoner toppled Checotah 65-21.
