Schools get grant to revive speech/ drama

Eufaula Public Schools has revitalized its Speech and Drama Education Department, thanks to a $5,000 Classroom Enhancement grant awarded by the Carolyn Watson Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation and administered by the Oklahoma City Community Foundation.

This grant will fuel a renais- sance of theatrical and speech education at Eufaula Public Schools, providing students with opportunities to develop creativity, confidence, and communication skills.

“This grant marks a turning point for our school and community,” said Selina Jayne-Dornan, Speech and Drama Teacher. “After more than a decade without a dedicated speech and drama program, we’re bringing the spotlight back to the stage! The Carolyn Watson Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation’s support empowers us to offer enriching experiences like play productions, competitions, and more, right here in Eufaula.”

The funds will go towards acquiring scripts, covering royalties, and supporting competition expenses, as well as purchasing costumes, props, sets, music, and media productions.

With these resources, Eufaula High School’s auditorium will offer live performances and student creativity.

“There will be future announcements about upcoming productions and events that promise to reignite the spirit of the arts in our community,” Dornan said.

It has been over 10 years since speech and drama were last offered at Eufaula Public Schools. This grant not only revives an important educational program but also celebrates the arts as a vital part of student growth and community culture.

The Carolyn Watson Rural Oklahoma Community Foundation was established in 1995 by the late Carolyn Watson, CEO and chairman of Shamrock Bank, N.A. Since its establishment, the Foundation has provided more than $3.8 million to schools, charitable organizations, and state and local government entities working to improve the quality of life in rural Oklahoma communities. Grants are administered by the Oklahoma City Community Foundation.
