Mary Hensley

Mary ‘Helen’ Hensley, 81, of Porum, Oklahoma passed away on Nov. 2, 2024. Helen (Angel) was born on April 24, 1943, to Harry Angel and Ola (Hiler) Carter in Wainwright, Oklahoma.

She married her husband, Gene Hensley, on Jan. 11, 1962, and they spent the next 62 years together. They married in Oklahoma, then relocated and raised their family in Illinois near Gene’s family. They retired and returned to Oklahoma in 2004, where Helen’s mother and many siblings resided.

Helen spent much of her life as a homemaker, caring for and nurturing her family with an enormous heart. Helen shared a uniquely close bond with her beloved granddaughter, Lindsey (Tyler) Wendt. Together, they created countless cherished memories, and this special connection was a source of happiness for both. Lindsey will always carry her grandmother’s love and legacy in her heart.

Helen deeply valued visits and frequent calls with her family and great grandchildren as well, and they brought her so much happiness and always made her smile. She loved spending time on her porch and watching birds and wildlife.

Despite facing many health challenges, Helen’s courage and will to live allowed her to overcome these obstacles. Her family was blessed by her strength and grateful to enjoy more time with her.

Helen is survived by her husband, Gene; daughter, Cheryl (John) Nelson of Sandwich, IL; granddaughter, Lindsey (Tyler) Wendt, Yorkville, IL; great-grandchildren, Gracelyn and Oliver, Yorkville, IL; sisters Rosetta Pack, Warner, OK; Alberta (Ted Blackwood) Girty, Vian, OK; brothers Howard Angel, Yelm, WA; Fred Carter, Porum, OK; and Charley Carter, Checotah, OK and several nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Hensley; brothers Lambert Scott, Melvin Scott, Eugene Scott and Johnny Carter; and sister Viola Bayliss.

Honoring Helen’s wishes, a funeral service will not be held.

Donations may be made to a charity of your choice in her honor.
