Are you proud or perturbed at your life’s role models?

The disciples had the most godly role model of all: Jesus Christ Himself. Their early churches had followers with rooted relationships that united them with a common bond. They genuinely shared each other’s burdens. They worshipped in the temple together, but they also had fellowship in their homes.

I wish I could have experienced a gathering with the first century family of believers. To see them partake in communion…. To see their stripped-down worship without years of added church traditions…. To hear how they prayed for boldness…. To see the joyful, sold-out commitment to God and each other….

Seeing them would have been truly remarkable. So, if you can just imagine—these disciples would have been the best possible role models outside of Jesus Himself. How about your role models? Who have you admired and looked up to? A good, strong role model can be a very powerful shaping force in our lives. Have you had the right kind?

Our culture throws plenty of role models at us, but unfortunately, not always the best kind. We live in a celebrity culture where role models are those who have achieved financial success in either music, acting or sports. However, many of those who have succeeded in these areas may not be good spiritual role models that lead to eternity in God’s Kingdom.

Jesus knew we need role models to help disciple us and mentor us. Why else would He spend over 3 years discipling, mentoring, and teaching others how to follow Him and live for God? One of the marks of discipleship in the early church Christians was outwardly showing love for God —and for others. Even before themselves!

Paul sets the tone for this mindset in Philippians 2:3-5: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”

Does that scripture describe your role models? Does it describe you—now that you’re a role model for others? The Bible tells us about two wonderful role models: Timothy and Epaphroditus, who both were driven by compassion and companionship and who suffered greatly for their faith. Serving Jesus and others will cost you, but it’s worth it!

We at LECC know the Christian life involves varying degrees of sacrifice, but it’s worth it because we get to bless others, and because it glorifies Jesus, who will reward every small act of obedience. Join us at 415987 Highway 9, Eufaula, where we have small group Bible study at 10 a.m., worship at 11 a.m., and Wednesday night activities at 6:30 p.m.

Join us in aspiring to earn the promise of Luke 14:14 which says, “You will be blessed… you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” What an incentive to follow Jesus— the world’s best role model— and try to emulate Him!

God Bless You!
