A former Checotah Intermediate School Teacher of the Year has been arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic abuse following an altercation Sunday.

Stacy Lafavor, 54, formerly Coleman, entered a not guilty plea to the charge at her initial court appearance Monday morning. Associate District Judge Brendon Bridges set bond at $2,500 and ordered her to stay away from Misty Broom.

Stacy is the ex-wife of former sheriff Jeff Coleman.

Lafavor’s next court appearance will be 9 a.m., Dec. 13.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Officer Justin Wittmer, Lafavor was intoxicated on Sunday, Oct. 27, when she entered a residence on West Gentry where her 90-yearold father-in-law Johnny Lafavor was staying under hospice care.

The residence is the home of Rebecca and Bobby Spaulding. Their daughter Misty Broom was there at the time.

Stacy, a fourth-grade teacher named Teacher of the Year in 2013, has been married to Robert Lafavor, Johnny’s son and Misty’s uncle, for about a month.

According to Wittmer, the incident was caused by a dispute over how to transport Johnny Lafavor to a hospital. It was thought he needed urgent care.

Police said Stacy and Robert Lafavor were drunk when they entered the residence and Stacy was cursing.

She allegedly punched Misty in the face and became involved in an altercation with the Spauldings.

Police were called during the altercation, during which several blows were exchanged According to the police report, Stacy said she was only defending herself in the melee.

A nurse who arrived at about that time determined that Johnny Lafavor’s vital signs were good and there was no need for him to be taken to the hospital.
