The last time Texas rode into the Cotton Bowl to face the Sooners ranked No. 1 in both polls was for the controversial 1984 clash. In a game pitting the teams ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in the AP poll against each other, a potential interception thrown by quarterback Todd Dodge in the end zone by Keith Stanberry was ruled an incomplete pass.

Jeff Ward’s ensuing field goal forced a 1515 tie on a dark, stormy day in Dallas, The game played almost 40 years removed from this year’s meeting (the tie game occurred on Oct. 13, 1984) marked the last time Fred Akers coached the Longhorns to a No. 1 ranking. The ranking and the team’s 4-0 start highlighted the 1984 season, one Texas ended by losing four of its final five games (including a 55-17 blowout loss to Iowa in the Freedom Bowl) en route to a 7-41 record (the Longhorns weren’t ranked in the final AP poll).

The Sooners and Longhorns will kick off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. OU and Texas have met at the State Fair of Texas on the south side of Dallas every year since 1929. The Cotton Bowl was completed in 1930.

Texas leads the alltime series 63-51-5.

The Longhorns won eight straight, their longest streak, against the Sooners from 1940-47. The Sooners won six straight from 1952-57.

OU’s 65-13 win in 2003 was the most lopsided game in the history of the series. Texas’ largest margin of victory was a 49-0 win in 2022.
