Wolverines claw past Ironheads 37-25
By Rodney Haltom sports EDITOR

The Class 3A No. 2 ranked Vian Wolverines (1-0) earned a tough road win with a 37-25 victory over the Eufaula Ironheads (0-1) Friday night at Paul Bell Stadium in Eufaula.

It was a tough battle with both teams scoring on long runs in the first quarter. Vian struck first to lead 7-0 when Masyn Wright ran for a 40-yard touchdown. The Ironheads used a stout rushing attack to move the football down the field. The Ironheads’ drive was capped off with a Ledger Folsom 70-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game.

Folsom went 8 of 12 for 83 yards passing and a touchdown and he ran for 107 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown.

Vian used their speed to get into the flats to score their second touchdown as Masyn Wright rumbled in from six yards out to take a 14-7 lead to end the first quarter.

The Ironheads would bounce back with a long, methodical drive of short runs by Peter Lee and Folsom.

Senior Maddox Bridges would cap off the drive with a touchdown catch to the corner of the end zone. The PAT failed and the score was 14-13.

Bridges led Eufaula in receiving with four receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Vian would attack the middle of the field as Eufaula’s defense struggled in the secondary. Vian’s Masyn Wright broke containment and ran for a 68-yard touchdown, PAT failed, and the score was 20-13 at the halftime break.

Peter Lee had a great game and it showed as he broke tackles and forced his way to a 37yard touchdown and yet again the PAT would fail.

On Vian’s first possession of the third quarter, the offense battled the Ironheads’ tough defensive front and took advantage of penalties as Draighton Fletcher ran in from 15 yards out to retake the lead with 8:18 left in the third quarter.

Masyn Wright extended the Wolverines’ lead with a 28-yard dash for a touchdown to make the score 34-19. Wright finished with 25 carries for 244 yards and four touchdowns.

Peter Lee would answer the call as he received great blocking from the offensive line and zoomed his way through Vian’s defenders and scored on a 29yard run to close the gap 34-25. Lee finished with 17 carries for 139 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The Wolverine offense would chip away at the clock in the fourth quarter and with 4:40 remaining in the contest Vian’s Millaya Mendoza kicked a 19-yard field goal to seal the 37-25 victory.

Vian finished with 411 yards of total offense compared to Eufaula’s 328 total offensive yards.

Eufaula will travel to Tahlequah Sequoyah September 13 with a 7 p.m. start.
