School year off to a good start
By JERRY FINK MANAGING EDITOR

If the school district received a grade for the start of the 2024-25 school year, it should be an “A.”

Despite the usual confusion amid excitement of any new school year, Thursday’s launch was relatively problem free.

“It was a really good first day,” said Superintendent Monty Guthrie, who was spotted helping direct traffic at a few locations and greeting students and teachers who were arriving in droves.

“Everyone was in the building by 8:15 a.m. and ready to go to class and most were gone by 3:30 p.m.,” he said.

He said all the kids at the elementary and middle schools were picked up or on the buses at the right time.

The new drop-off point on the east side of the elementary, seemed to relieve some of the past traffic congestion at the start of the school day.

There were lots of new things for students to adapt to, besides the drop off point.

The school hired a dozen or more new teachers and a new principal at the Elementary School, Dorothy Moseley, who replaces Kristel Hickman, who resigned to become principal at Crowder High School.

The Middle School has a new air condition unit, after sweating it out for several months.

There’s a new fence and guard gate at the High School.

There are a lot of new students, but Guthrie said it’s hard to say where the school is at this time.

“The numbers at the dormitory aren’t in yet,” he said.

The high school enrolment is 410, which is higher than normal.

“That’s a pretty good number,” he said.

But it may fluctuate in the days ahead.

The first big event for the community was Friday, Aug. 16, with a parade up Main Street followed by a people rally at Paul Bell Stadium.

BEACON, the afterschool program will begin in the days ahead with an expected enrollment of about 200. This is an after-school program offering a safe place for students during the after-school hours. They have time for homework assignments and tutoring as well as a variety of enrichment activities, including crafts, technology, physical education and more.

Students also receive a healthy snack each afternoon.

The Lady Ironhead fastpitch schedule is already underway, having begun on Aug. 12 at Roland.

Football will begin on Aug. 23 with a scrimmage at Morris.
