WOM E N’S BASKETBALL HALL of FAME

Knoxville (TN) – The Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the only female-only basketball hall of fame recognizing the national and international game, has announced its’ Class of 2024.

The Hall of Fame will also recognize Cheyney University as the recipient of the “Trailblazer of the Game” award.

The Lady Wolves of Cheyney State College (now Cheyney University) is the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to have won a women’s or NCAA Division I Basketball Conference/Regional Championship. It is also the first to have an all-African-American Coaching staff, led by Hall of Famer C. Vivian Stringer.

The “For the Love of the Game” award will be presented to the Afghan Resettlement Program, a group of 13 coaches and players from Afghanistan. These young, brave, and courageous women’s basketball players embody the “For the Love of the Game” mantra, as they have risked their lives, leaving their families behind in Afghanistan in pursuit of the freedom to play basketball without fear of imprisonment, torture, or death.

The Tennessee Theater will host the induction ceremony on April 27, 2024, at 5:30 PM. Each recipient will receive the Berenson Trophy, named after Sendra Berenson, who is considered to be the Mother of Women’s Basketball. Smith College sponsors the Berenson Trophy.
