Sunday, June 23, is Jackson Lewis Commemoration Day.

The legendary fullblood Creek will be honored at an event to be held at the Eufaula Indian Community Center, 800 Birkes Rd., from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Everyone is welcome. Family members are urged to come to the event.

Lewis, who died in Eufaula in 1910, was a young boy when the federal government removed the Creeks from their land in Alabama to Oklahoma.

He was schooled in the old Indian arts of medicine, according to The Chronicles of Oklahoma, and became a well-known doctor among the Indians and whites.

During the Civil War he was a doctor in Company K of the Second Regiment Creek Indian Volunteers.

After the war he became a member of the Creek National Council and was also a representative of the Eufaula-Canadian Town.

He was a respected Hitchiti man. Stories about him will be told. Invitation is extended to anyone to share any story or knowledge about him. We need to keep our family history alive.

The meal will be potluck. Please bring a food item dish, desserts, or drinks.

Lunch will be served. Monetary donations accepted for the meal.

We will have a drawing for door prizes. Everyone is welcome to bring a donated item for the drawing.
