Pride of Eufaula wins coveted OSSAA State Sweepstakes Award

The Pride of Eufaula competed at the OSSAA State Concert Band Contest on Wednesday, March 27 at East Central University.

Thirty-one (3A) bands from the state of Oklahoma advanced to the state contest this year.

Six bands out of the 31 were lucky enough to obtain the highest award possible for a high school band: the OSSAA State Sweepstakes Award.

The Eufaula High School Band achieved their “24th” OSSAA State Sweepstakes Award this year.

As stated previously, this is the highest award possible and is equivalent to an athletic state championship.

In order to achieve this, the high school band starts working in the summer months and begins rigorous practice in August and continues the entire school year.

The band must earn a Superior Rating at the OSSAA Regional Marching Contest in October, they must earn a Superior Rating at OSSAA District Concert Band Contest and must earn a Superior Rating on stage and in Sight Reading at OSSAA State Concert Band Contest.

“This is such a difficult achievement and we could not be more proud of the students,” said Band Director Rusty Helms.

Helms thanked the Amazing Band Boosters, Band Parents, School Administration, School Board and the School Staff for all of their support and help in working together to allow the students to participate in so many activities.

“We would also like to thank the Eufaula Police Department and Fire Department for escorting the band back into town on the day of state!!

“We would also like to give a shout out to Peter Lee and Dobber’s for hosting our entire band for a meal on the day of state. A huge thank you to our amazing students who are a part of our program. Thank you for your hard work and dedication! A special thank you to our seniors for their dedication!”
