James Wesley Sponsler

James Wesley Sponsler, 89, of Eufaula, Oklahoma passed away on February 20, 2024 at his home. James was born on November 27, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri to Russell and Mary Estelle (Fry) Sponsler. He graduated from John Marshall High School in Oklahoma City in 1953. Jim started working for Halliburton in 1955 and worked as a field supervisor. On December 18, 1970, he married Dena Kay Duel in Perryton, Texas. They were happily married for fifty-three years. After retiring in 1990, Jim and Dena made their home in Eufaula. Jim worked for NAPA Auto Parts in Eufaula for several years. He also was a volunteer firefighter with the Longtown Fire Department and was the Chief for one year. Jim was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as a member of the Trustee Committee and later served as Chairman. He continued to help wherever necessary throughout the church. He was also active in the men’s group. Jim loved fishing and traveling with Dena in their RV.

Survivors include: wife, Dena Kay Sponsler, of the home; daughter: Marilyn Frances Sponsler Reiswig, of Edmond; daughter in-law, Candy Thomas Sponsler, of Oklahoma City; sister, Marilyn Louise Sponsler, of Oklahoma City; grandchildren: Shauna Rae Cowan, of Perryton, TX; Marilyn Michelle Sternlof and spouse Dr. Steven Sternlof, of Edmond; Mathew James Sponsler, of Oklahoma City; Gracie Lynn Sponsler, of Oklahoma City; great grandchildren: Kilee, Ella, Hadlee, Addison, Landon, Jocelyn, and Brooklyn. He is preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Mary Sponsler; daughter, Terry Lynn Sponsler; and son, James Russell Sponsler.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 2, 2024 at the Eufaula First United Methodist Church with Reverend Mike Brannon and Reverend Duane Baker officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eufaula First United Methodist Church Building Fund. Cremation arrangements were made with Hunn Black & Merritt Funeral Home & Crematory.
