Liars against lyres

Liars against lyres

My pastor this past Sunday preached the best message entitled “Tune Your Heart to Truth” and the difference between a liar and a lyre. While we all know a liar is a person who speaks lies and a lyre is a stringed instrument tuned to accompany a song, liars are always against lyres which try to get us back in tune with God.

In Psalm 144:1-10 David, who was a man after God’s own heart, wrote: ”Praise be to the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me…I will sing a new song to you, my God; on the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you, to the One who gives victory to kings, who delivers his servant David. From the deadly sword deliver me; rescue me from the hands of foreigners whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful.”

Just like David so many times in life we get overwhelmed with all the lies of the enemy. It seems like lies come from everywhere today, even our highest authorities and leaders. Lies are spread in many places from homes to workplaces to social media and beyond, yet sadly so many choose to believe these lies rather than the truth.

However, we must learn to tune our heart to truth like Colossians 3:1 states to “set our hearts on things above” not on the lies of man.

Man says “Follow your heart” but His Word says in Proverbs 4:23 to “guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

It is so easy to get caught up in what the world says and in the craziness that others do. Daily we are in a war of lies being spoken to us, over us and about us. However we must remember what God said in Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.” Even He knew that we would have to be constantly careful with our hearts.

Our greatest fears and our greatest faith come from the same heart. This is why we have to guard it and stay in tune with God. He tunes our heartstrings to get us back in tune with Him. You may even feel the tug at your heart as He pulls at your heartstrings because tuning often requires more tension in the strings. However, we can rest assured that He is working all things together for our good.

So let God put His hands on the strings of your heart. Tune out the liars and make sure the lyres are in tune with Him.

“Let God be true, and every man, a liar.” (Romans 3:4) As seasons change in your life, keep tuning up daily to God and let Him guide your heart.

Like the song “Come Thy Fount” says “Come Thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace…”

May we guard our hearts with all diligence and may our hearts be sealed unto that great day when He comes to take us away. Amen.
