Develop good Godly habits

Lake Eufaula Christian Church

We should never underestimate how God can do something big through one small habit. God can help you take a small habit and begin to transform you into the person He is calling you to be.

Think about what you normally do at the beginning of your workday. What do you do when you wake up? Whether you go to work, school, or stay home, the odds are very high that what you did on a normal day this past week was very similar to what you did on a normal day the week before. Probably you went to the bathroom and then instantly checked social media or your email, maybe read your Bible, maybe did a little workout and took a shower, perhaps made coffee and grabbed some breakfast.

Then, you probably got to work or school a similar way you did the day before. You probably dealt with mostly the same people and did similar things. You probably got home the same way and had a normal evening routine sitting on the couch, looking at social media, or binge-watching Netflix. Maybe you spent time praying before bed. But chances are your day was very similar to the day before.

A Duke University research study of thousands of people concluded that 40 percent of actions any given day are not because of conscious decisions but because of habits you’ve already formed. People who built good godly habits do perpetually what others do periodically, and their good godly habits bring them success.

A perfect example of this truth is exemplified by scripture’s story of Daniel who had the faith to stand down lions and survive with God’s help. But what’s most impressive about Daniel is the unordinary positioning that got him in that situation. Daniel 6:3 tells us that “Daniel so distinguished himself…. by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.”

Jealous competitors tried to find grounds for charges against him, but “could find no corruption in him because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.” (Daniel 6:4). So the envious men tricked the king into issuing a decree that anyone praying to anyone except King Darius would be thrown into the lion’s den. Did that decree change Daniel’s habit? Absolutely not. “Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.” (Daniel 6:10).

When King Darius found him unharmed in the lion’s den, “God used a small habit of faith and changed a country.” (Daniel 6:28) Daniel’s faithfulness and deliverance from the lion’s den are considered a powerful testament to the providence and protection of God in the face of adversity.

If you don’t have a keystone habit comparable to Daniel’s, maybe it’s time to develop one. What one small daily habit could build your faith, change your marriage, empower you as a parent, or equip you as a spiritual leader?

Maybe you could start by visiting our LECC congregation this month at 415987 Highway 9, Eufaula for small group Bible study at 10 a.m., worship at 11 a.m., and Wednesday night classes for all ages at 6:30 p.m. Come share our goal of developing good, godly habits to ward off the lions of today’s amoral society.

God Bless You!
