Special Correspondence Inter-Ocean

In the center of their camp the warriors had formed a large circle, about 50 feet in circumference, in many places in two ranks, and so close as to lap shoulder over shoulder.

In the center were five squaws in line, the even numbers holding the scalps suspended from the tops of long, slender pole, which, bending beneath their weight, swayed with every motion of their shoulders, showing in the light of the full moon, a bloody clotted mass of hair that looked more like two black rags than the capillary ornament of a Sioux warrior…

Aug. 3 – The command broke camp early and marched to our old camp at the junction of the Main and Middle Goose Creeks, from whence we debouched previous to the Rosebud fight. This will probably be the permanent camp where our wagons will be packed away for the issue of the next campaign.

Rain-in-the -Face

Rain-in-the-Face, a hostile Indian Chief, is reported to have arrived at Standing Rock Agency, with 122 lodges, having deserted the cause of Sitting Bull.

Indian conflicts

Cheyenne, Aug. 15. – Two companies of the 4th cavalry left here for the north yesterday, and two companies of the 14th infantry arrived from Utah, yesterday, and await orders – four companies of the 4th artillery are expected tomorrow.

To Jail They Went

Bill Smith and Andrew Chastain of Spokogee, charged with introducing and selling, were bound over to the Eufaula grand jury at Muskogee Monday and went to jail in default of bond.

Another Paper

It is whispered in the Journal mans ear that Eufaula is to have another paper soon. It will be owned, controlled, managed and edited by Eufaula money, labor and brains, and will have an inclination to lean towards the Republican party politically. There’s always room for one more.

100 YEARS AGO

Thursday, December 20,1923

NO CHARGES ARE TO BE FILED AGAINST LYNCH IN EUFAULA McIntosh county officials have no word that Rev. F.W. Lynch, well known evangelist who was arrested several days ago at Dallas, is to be prosecuted here on a charge of bigamy.

Lynch was jailed at Dallas on complaint of his wife who lives in Wichita, Kan. The complaint grows out of Lynchs marriage in Eufaula two years ago to this choir singer, Miss Ollie Stephens.

EUFAULA LAUNCHES MILITARY BRANCH Local commissioned officers in the reserve Corp. met at the high school building here and perfected an officer’s club of men holding regular commissions and are called for active army service once each year.

H.R. Jordan was elected president of the club and C.R. Aingell is secretary. The first work outlined for the new organization is the establishing of an aviation field, organization of a machine gun unit of the 378th infantry and placing Eufaula on the list of all aero clubs and flying fields as having a desirable landing place for passing aviators.

TWO EUFAULANS AWARDED SILVER STAR MEDALS

With the 5th Army, Italy (Special to the Indian Journal) – Corporal Cecil C. Lynch, Company H, Infantry Regiment, husband of Mrs. Nota J. Lynch, Eufaula, for gallantry in action in July 1943 in Sicily, has been awarded the Silver Star Medal.

Private First-Class David Francis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Francis of Eufaula, has been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. He is now serving with troops of the Fifth Army in Italy.

Navy Needs Short Patrol Specialists

There is an acute need in the Navy for men 38 to 44 years old who have had previous police experience to serve as Shore Patrol Specialist.

Petty officer ratings from third through first class are available to applicants in proportion to their experience. At least two years’ experience is required for the third-class rating.

Blevins Held In German Prison

Miss Rachel Blevins has received a letter from her brother, A.J., Untied States soldier, saying he is being held a prisoner in Germany He was made a prisoner while on the battlefront in Italy.

This is the first word Miss Blevins has had from her brother since January this year. Both the soldier’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Blevins, who made this city their home, have died since the young man entered the army, but his sister has been unable to notify him of his parents’ death.

The Eufaula soldier entered the service with the National Guard here in the summer of 1941 and was one of the first to be sent overseas.

HEARS FROM SON IN JAP PRISON

Mrs. Herb Howell is in receipt of a letter from her son, J.B., who is being held as a Jap prisoner. He reports himself will and enjoying good health.

1948: Year in Review The weather made the most important and spectacular news in McIntosh county during the year just closing, but a close contender for top billing as a subject of news and casual conversation was the Eufaula reservoir or dam.

Dams for Power Are Best Defense, Senator Asserts

WASHINGTON – Sen. Morse (R„ Ore.) said Tuesday “The greatest defense weapon we have is the potential electric power resources of the country.

Russia, he said, is watching construction of power dams more than any other phase of the country’s defense program. He added he plans a strong fight in the new congress for ample funds for power development, flood control, reclamation and soil conservation.

Extended Social Security Endorsed By Republican

WASHINGTON – A prominent republican agreed with President Truman Wednesday that present old-age insurance is “inadequate” and announced he will offer a bill to double the minimum benefits and to bring 20,000,000 more persons into the program.

James Duty, Manager Of Lake Murray Lodge

Oklahoma City – James Duty has been named manager of the Lake Murray State Lodge, Ardmore, it has been announced.

Duty, 26, previously was manager of Quartz mountain State Lodge in southwest Oklahoma. Duty and his wife, Linda, are moving to Lake Murray. Mrs.. Duty is a teacher in the Altus public school system.

Mrs. Duty is a graduate of Eufaula High School and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Buel Brown, Eufaula.

25 YEARS AGO Thursday, December 31,1998

Merry Christmas, Eufaula; Love’s Store nears reality

Just a couple of days before Christmas – on Tuesday, Dec. 22 – city officials received the deed to approximately 8.35 acres to be used for construction of a new Love’s Country Store at the intersection of Business 69 (Main Street) and U.S. Highway 69.

“This will bring lots of money to Eufaula,” said Mayor Bill Day. “Just like Checotah’s Truck Stop did for Checotah.”

City employee Stan Kelley said that Love’s original estimate of sales at the store was $3 million per year. “Our three percent sales tax amounts to $90,000 at that figure,” he said.

Creek Nation, U.S. Cellular finalize lease

The Muskogee (Creek) Nation-Eufaula Dormitory has recently finalized a lease agreement to allow construction of a 180-foot cellular tower for United States Cellular Telephone of Greater Tulsa, L.L.C. The tower is constructed on the campus of the Eufaula Dormitory in Eufaula.

Grace period expires for public school vaccine requirements

Students who are not current with the state required immunization schedule will not be allowed to attend school, according to officials of Eufaula public schools, and students returning from Christmas break without current immunizations will be sent home.
