I will make you into a great nation

Lake Eufaula Christian Church

This summer at LECC we’re traveling through the Bible and learning from people who met God on the road. Each week we’ll look at characters God encountered and how their lives were different because they did what He told them to do. The first was Abram, later to be Abraham— the man considered to be the father of our faith.

We’re not starting with Adam and Eve because they got off the right road with God. But God—in His goodness— had a plan to get humanity back on the right road. God wanted Abram to travel with his family more than 600 miles from Ur to just past the halfway point, Haran, on the way to Canaan land.

Genesis 11:31-32 tells us that “one day Terah took his son Abram, his daughter-in-law Sarai (his son Abram’s wife), and his grandson Lot (his son Haran’s child) and moved away from Ur of the Chaldeans. He was headed for the land of Canaan, but they stopped at Haran and settled there. Terah lived for 205 years and died while still in Haran.”

Abram was 75 years old and happy in Haran when God told him, “Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father’s family, and go to the land that I will show you. I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:1-3) God broke into Abram’s ordinary life and spoke magnificent promises to him. Woven throughout these promises are three specific action words—“Leave. Go. Be.” Maybe these three words are something that you need to chew on as you also contemplate going on a road trip with God.

Abram had to make a decision to leave what had become familiar to him. He had to decide to trust God with the outcome. He would have to separate himself from his country, not knowing what language might be spoken in Canaan—his father’s original, unreached destination. He would also have to leave his relatives, separating himself from his support system and surrounding himself with strangers. Sound easy? Absolutely not!

Abram’s road trip began with surrendering faith to God’s will. Some of you right now might still be living in Ur. You might not have realized that there’s a God who loves you, knows everything about you, and has been orchestrating things so that at the right moment, you’ll want to meet Him on the road of your faith journey. You may not have known that a personal, loving Savior wants to road trip with you in this life.

You might have been trying to journey all on your own through success, through relationships, and maybe even through numerous religions, and you still feel unfulfilled. If so, put your trust in God who may be telling you today to get off of your own road. Lay it all down, surrender it to Him, and turn and walk on His road which ultimately leads to life eternal.

At LECC we try to emulate Abraham who “never wavered in believing God’s promise…. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever he promises.” (Romans 4:20-21). Join us at 415987 Highway 9, Eufaula, for Sunday school at 10 a.m., worship at 11 a.m., and Wednesday all-age activities at 6:30 p.m., and don’t settle for Haran if God is calling you to Canaan!

God Bless You!
