1913 110 YEARS AGO L.B. Griffing and Trevor Faulkner new owners and will give house overhauling

Last Friday the Majestic Theater will all appurtenances which been owned the past two years by Messrs, A.J. McDaniels became the property of Messrs, L.B. Griffing and Trevor Faulkner and very soon improvements to cost several hundred dollars will be underway.

Leon Stock Co. will open the summer season at the Majestic theater the first week in June in a strong repertoire featuring that old time favorite Mr. Billy Neff.

Harvest near at hand

Oats in this section are rapidly heading and harvest will be on within the next fifteen days. The outlook continues promising for the best crop in the history of the country.

YEARS AGO Well on Rampage

Excitement at fever heat over big gas showing in Bynum Well north of the city. the fever of excitement ran wild among Checotah citizens last night and this morning caused by the coming in unexpectedly of the Bynum and Douglas test on the Rosendahl farm in 21-12-17.

Commencement Exercises Friday night mark closing of very successful year The High school auditorium was comfortably filled last Friday night to witness the final event of the school year’s activities-the commencement exercises.

Thirty-one pupils, the largest class in history of the school finished their high school course and were presented with their coveted diplomas.

Class of 1918

Dreams came true for the class of 1918 last week when fourteen of the nineteen members returned for the class reunion. This was the first class graduating from Checotah High School to attempt a reunion and the success is manifested in the large number who left their respective duties to again renew, for a few days, the old but lasting friendships.

Miss Louise Lynn entertained the class of 1918 with a Rook party on Saturday evening at her home.

Wednesday marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of First National Bank Reminiscences of early days in Checotah when the city was only a small village of 300 or 400 population were recalled to the memories of the older residents at the open house given by the First National Bank in honor of their 25th Anniversary, organized on May 23,1898.

1933 90 YEARS AGO J.O. Crook is elected as Checotah Principal

At a recent meeting of the Checotah board of Education, James Crook was unanimously elected principal of Checotah High School for the coming year. Crook is well known in the state, having served as principal and superintendent in several cities in Oklahoma and was active in the work of the Oklahoma Education Association and was president of the northeastern district.

Mayor asks for stores to close during ceremony

All business institutions in Checotah have been asked to close Tuesday morning May 30, by Acting-Mayor Ed Lynn, so that all citizens may attend the Memorial Day program.

Proclamation: Whereas May 30th of each year is a National Holiday and should be set apart for memorial services in memory of those who gave their lives in the defense of our country andwhereas a Memorial Program will be rendered at the High School Auditorium at Checotah, Okla, do hereby proclaim May 30, 1933 should be observed as a Holiday and respectfully request that all places of businesses be closed on hour from 10:30-11:30 and that every citizen attend the Memorial Program at the High School at that time and that all available American Flags be displayed in the City during that day.

(Mayor L.K. Sharpe left last week for a 10 day vacation trip to Texas and Mississippi, accompanied by his wife and children.

Red Bird Cafe re-opened Wednesday

the Red Bird Cafe, formerly operated by the Mc-Intosh family, was re-opened Wednesday under the management of Mrs. Madge Meyers and Thelma Burkhalter. They have one of the best cafes in the city and invite your patronage.

1968 55 YEARS AGO Old Settlers set reunion

This years Old Settlers Day Celebration, which will be held Saturday, June 8, will be bigger and better than ever, according to Bill Reynolds, who said every effort is being made to schedule top entertainment to insure a day of fun and excitement for the crowds, which are expected to flock to Checotah for the big event. Plans are being made for an antique show and for a dance to follow the rodeo performance on Saturday night.

Yvonne Wright, second grade teacher of Longfellow school, has been selected by the OEA unit of McIntosh County as teacher of the year for the 1968-1969 school term.
