Healthy families have God conversations

Lake Eufaula Christian Church

At LECC, we’re currently going through a message series called “Our Imperfect Family.”

All throughout the Bible God uses imperfect, dysfunctional families for His good purposes. Since God created the family, then He knows how it should function the best. So, we’ve been discussing 5 Biblical Principles for a Spiritually Healthy Family. This week our principle was “Healthy Families Have God Conversations.”

A God conversation is one of talking and sharing the truths of the Bible and God’s work in our lives with those around us. Such a chat might happen in many ways. Maybe your family has a set time for family worship, or maybe you share what God’s doing in your life over a meal. Everyday encounters provide opportunities for teaching God’s word to your family.

However you find to do so, make it a part of your routine to talk with your family about God. Some might think they’re too imperfect to approach the God subject, but were that the case, our entire population would have to zip their lips on the subject. No one is perfect, but God found use for hundreds of imperfect people in the Biblical era—and still does!

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment in all the Old Testament was, He pointed back to Deuteronomy 6:4-9: “Listen, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.”

The declaration that “the Lord our God, the Lord is one” is the core of our belief system. We believe there is only one true God, but as imperfect people, we can have trouble explaining this idea of God to our children. It might help to compare the one true God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—but still God, to water, which can be liquid, ice, or steam—but still water.

What should we do because of that belief? Our response must be to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.” That order demands us to give God the chief position in our hearts, minds, families, and homes. The rest of the above quote stresses sharing God with our families. To share God we must first know Him. If we don’t know what the Bible says so we understand His ways, how can we honestly and effectively speak about Him to our family. The truth is—we can’t!

The solution? Get to know Him personally by opening your Bible and reading. Surround yourself with others who are seeking to have God conversations. Come with your family to 415987 Highway 9, Eufaula, for 10 a.m. Sunday school, where each can go to an age-appropriate class, stay for the 11 a.m. Bible-based worship, and come back Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for additional study and fun. I promise that you’ll soon be comfortable having God conversations with your family in your own home. Know Him, love Him, and keep Him in your heart. No better advice has ever been given.

God Bless You!
