How easy it is for us to imagine Peter’s terror when, as he struggles to walk towards Jesus atop the wind beaten waves on the Sea of Galilee, he suddenly becomes aware of his dangerous reality and begins to sink into the deep, dark water. The disciples had been struggling in their boat against gale force winds all night long when Jesus came walking towards them across the water, telling them not to be afraid. Despite the storm, Peter insisted upon walking to Jesus, but soon became frightened by the wind and the waves and began to sink. “Jesus, save me!” he cries. Jesus immediately pulls him up to safety, and when they return to the boat, the storm is calmed (Matthew 14:22-33).
