Basketball season has officially arrived in McIntosh County, and both the Eufaula Ironheads and the Checotah Wildcats are gearing up for what promises to be one of the most exciting winters in years as both schools start the season December 2. Rival gyms, proud towns, and two fan bases hungry for big moments — the stage is set, and the energy is already buzzing.
Eufaula Ironheads: Speed, Swagger & Rising Stars
The Ironheads come into the new season with a new boys’ coach and with the kind of confidence that only comes from returning experience, raw athleticism, and a chip on their shoulder. Eufaula looks fast, feisty, and fearless, ready to push the tempo and turn every game into a track meet as they return Ty Sparks, Jentry James, Logan Plant and Keaton Parish on the boys team and Johna Bumgarner, Olivia Hamby and Hannah Needham among others.
Eufaula’s backcourt is expected to be one of its biggest weapons, with guards who can handle the ball under pressure, score in bunches, and spark momentum at any moment. Add in an improving inside presence and a bench loaded with energy players, and the Ironheads look poised to compete with anyone on their schedule.
Expect Eufaula to rely on hard-nosed defense, attacking the passing lanes and turning turnovers into points. When the Ironheads run, they’re at their best — and this year, they’re planning to run a lot.
Inside the Perry Anderson Gymnasium will only see two games this season as they prepare to begin construction on a new gym this December. The message for Eufaula is simple: Play fast. Play tough. Play together.
Checotah Wildcats: Power, Pride & a New Edge
Over in Checotah, the Wildcats are sharpening their claws for a bounceback campaign built on discipline, physicality, and a little bit of swagger of their own. With experienced leaders returning and several young players ready to step into the spotlight, Checotah is embracing a mindset of toughness and team-first play.
The Wildcats are expected to be strong in the paint, using size and strength to control the boards and dictate the pace. Their defense could quickly become their hallmark — a gritty, body-on-the-floor style that makes every possession a battle. The Wildcats return Hudson Polland, Cole Rolfrom land, Cooper Cutbirth, Rowan Chapman, Elijah Mohammad and Wes Brown.
Offensively, Checotah has shooters who can stretch the floor and slashing guards who aren’t afraid to attack the rim. If the Wildcats get hot early, they’re the type of team that can turn a quiet crowd into a roaring one in a matter of minutes, especially Lady Wildcats’ lone senior Shyanne Madewell.
This year’s mantra: Earn everything. Fear nothing.
A County Rivalry ready to ignite Eufaula and Checotah never need motivation when they face one another — the rivalry speaks for itself. But this season, with both teams carrying high expectations, the matchups could become must-see basketball.
Two towns. Two programs with tradition. Two student sections ready to erupt.
As the lights come up and the first whistles blow, one thing is certain: McIntosh County winter nights are about to get LOUD.
