We were created for connection—first with God, then with each other. Whether through family, friendship, or marriage, relationships are God’s gift to remind us of His love.
When I was single, I wasn’t chasing a girlfriend; I was chasing God. That season felt like a flashlight—focused, bright, but narrow. Then came Kim, and our lights joined into a broader floodlight that reached farther together than either could alone. Both seasons—singleness and marriage—were gifts from God, meant to shine for His glory.
The Apostle Paul wrote, “It is good for them if they remain even as I am.” (1 Corinthians 7:8) Paul knew that singleness allows undivided devotion to the Lord. Yet, Genesis 2:18 tells us, “It is not good for man to be alone.” Both truths coexist. God uses each season to shape us for His purpose. Marriage and singleness aren’t rival callings; they’re complementary ways to reflect God’s heart.
When the Sadducees questioned Jesus about marriage in heaven (Luke 20:27–38), He reminded them that earthly marriage is temporary. “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage… but those who are counted worthy to attain that age… neither marry nor are given in marriage.” (Luke 20:34–35) Marriage here meets earthly needs—companionship, comfort, and shared service— but in heaven, love itself is perfected in Christ. That’s gain, not loss! Our earthly relationships are signposts pointing toward an eternal union with God.
Meanwhile, Jesus modeled godly friendship on earth. In Luke 14, He healed a man on the Sabbath, then told His dinner hosts not to seek honor for themselves but to “invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind.” (Luke 14:13) That’s how the kingdom works—humility before hierarchy, compassion before comfort. Whether we’re single or married, our calling is to be godly friends who welcome others as Jesus would.
So, how’s your light shining? If you’re single, shine brightly with focus and faith. If you’re married, let your shared light illuminate more of the world. Either way, don’t get distracted by what you don’t have; be devoted with what you do. Remember Jesus’ words, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40) Let’s live with hearts humble enough to serve, bold enough to shine, and joyful enough to glorify God in every season. If you’re looking for a place to let your light shine, come join our family at LECC, 415897 Highway 9, Eufaula— small group Bible study at 10 a.m., worship at 11 a.m., and Wednesday night all-age activities at 6:30 p.m.
