The Checotah Wildcats left everything on the field Thursday night, falling just short in a 29-26 thriller against the Holland Hall Dutchmen — a matchup that showcased grit, heart, and big-time playmaking on both sides of the ball.

Slow start, fierce finish

The first half belonged mostly to the defenses. Checotah’s offense fought to find rhythm while Holland Hall managed to break through midway through the second quarter, punching in a touchdown to go up 7-0. The Wildcats’ defense, led by a determined front line, made key stops — including a redzone stand inside their own 15-yard line — that kept the game close heading into halftime.

Wildcats come alive after the break

Whatever was said in the locker room worked. The Wildcats came out of halftime with renewed fire. On the opening defensive series, senior Elijah Muhammad broke through to block a punt, setting Checotah up with prime field position on the Holland Hall 35-yard line. A bruising ground attack led by Jayden Ellen pushed the Wildcats to the six-yard line, where quarterback Cole Rolland powered in for a six-yard score. The extra point attempt was blocked, leaving Holland ahead 7-6.

Moments later, Rolland showed off his arm, connecting with Jayden Lake on a nineyard touchdown strike to give Checotah its first lead. But the Dutchmen answered quickly, regaining the advantage at 14-12.

Rolland’s heroics ignite the crowd

On the very next possession, sophomore linebacker Cole Rolland turned defense into instant offense. Reading the quarterback’s eyes, he tipped a pass into the air, hauled it in himself at the 35-yard line, and nearly scored before being stopped at the 1. On the following play, he finished the job with a QB sneak. Rolland then hit Jayden Ellen for a successful two-point conversion, giving Checotah a 20-14 lead and electrifying the Wildcat sideline.

Fourth-quarter showdown

Checotah’s defense dug deep again, forcing a punt and setting up another long drive. Mixing tough runs from Tommy Calico and smart passes from Rolland, the Wildcats marched downfield. Calico capped the drive with a powerful fouryard touchdown run, extending the lead to 26-14 with just 4:35 remaining.

But Holland Hall wasn’t done. The Dutchmen struck with a pair of long pass plays to move deep into Wildcat territory. Hudson Pollard appeared to seal the game for Checotah with a highlight interception, but a defensive holding call negated the play, breathing new life into Holland’s offense. The Dutchmen capitalized, cutting the lead to 26-21.

Then came the turning point: Holland executed a perfect onside kick and recovered with 4:04 left. A few plays later, the Dutchmen found the end zone again to pull ahead 29-26.

Wildcats fight to the final whistle Refusing to quit, Rolland led one last charge — completing several key passes and using his legs to drive the Wildcats to the Holland 33-yard line with under a minute to go. On fourth-and-three, he delivered a beautiful pass toward the sideline that slipped heartbreakingly through his receiver’s hands, sealing the narrow defeat.

Proud but hungry

Despite the outcome, Checotah showed the toughness and resilience that defines Wildcat football. “They battled from start to finish,” Checotah head coach Zac Ross said after the game. “We were a play or two away.”

The Wildcats (now 4-3) will look to bounce back on the road next Friday night when they take on the No.3 ranked team in the state in Lincoln Christian in another crucial district matchup.
