Mateer, defense spark No. 11 Sooners past Auburn in SEC thriller
By Rodney Haltom sports EDITOR

John Mateer threw for 271 yards and delivered the game-winning nine-yard touchdown run with under five minutes left as No. 11 Oklahoma stormed past No. 22 Auburn, 24-17, on Saturday night in Norman. The Sooners (4-0, 1-0 SEC) head into their bye week unbeaten after a statement win fueled by clutch plays and a relentless defense.

The OU defense tied a program record with 10 sacks, harassing Auburn’s backfield all night. “Proud of our players: the determination, the resolve, the grit, the ability to overcome, keep fighting back, keep striking,” head coach Brent Venables said after the win.

One of the biggest sparks came from R Mason Thomas, who entered after halftime and immediately changed the game. He picked up a sack on just his second snap of the third quarter, then sealed the victory by dragging down Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold for a safety with 1:06 left.

With Venables dialing up the pressure, Oklahoma’s defensive front accounted for 7.5 of the 10 sacks, limiting the Tigers to just 287 yards. Defensive tackle Jayden Jackson added 2.5 sacks, while eight different Sooners recorded at least half a sack. The unit also piled up 14 tackles for loss and three QB hurries.

On offense, Mateer’s poise was matched by his receivers. Isaiah Sategna erupted for career highs with nine receptions and 127 yards, highlighted by a 24-yard touchdown strike. Kicker Tate Sandell drilled three field goals, while punter Grayson Miller flipped the field with a booming 54.4-yard average.

The victory marks OU’s second straight win over a ranked opponent, showing their resilience after Auburn briefly took the lead in the fourth quarter. Mateer’s late touchdown erased that deficit, and the defense slammed the door shut.

“This game was about toughness,” Venables said. “The storyline had to be our defensive line playing their butts off and they delivered.”

Oklahoma now enjoys a bye week before hosting Kent State on Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. on SEC Network.
