Life is unpredictable and we never know for sure what may happen next. However, there are some things that should not surprise you. Here are some examples.
First – God works in ways that we do not understand. In John 3 Jesus says this to Nicodemus. Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’
It should not surprise us that God is at work to bring the entire world to Jesus.
It should not surprise us that God desires to work through us to make this happen.
Second – there is not guarantee for tomorrow. James writes in James 4 – “Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money. Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. “
Third – it should not surprise you when flawed people fail but God has our back.
Jesus said this in Luke 21 – “You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. But not a hair of your head will perish. Stand firm, and you will win life.”
It should not surprise us that people can fall and fail. But we should take heart that Jesus sees and making a way for us through even the greatest betrayal.
Life is surprising but we can know the power and love of our Savior and live in His strength. People and things will always disappoint but Jesus NEVER fails!
