Sooners crush Temple behind Mateer & Blaylock show
By Rodney Haltom sports EDITOR

University of Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer was electric on the East Coast stage, throwing for 282 yards and a touchdown while adding a dazzling 51yard scoring run as No. 11 Oklahoma steamrolled Temple 42-3 on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field. Running back Tory Blaylock piled on 100 yards and two touchdowns, giving the Sooners a balanced offensive punch that the Owls couldn’t withstand.

The Sooners (3-0) wasted no time proving their dominance, scoring on their first four possessions to sprint out to a 25-0 first-half lead. The crimson-and-cream faithful who made the rare East Coast trip were loud and proud among the 24,927 in attendance — and OU rewarded them with another convincing performance that looked every bit like a playoff contender.

Jovantae Barnes opened the floodgates with a 3-yard touchdown plunge, followed by a two-point conversion for an early 8-0 edge. Even when Temple (2-1) forced a rare fourth-andlong, Tate Sandell drilled a booming 52-yard field goal to keep momentum squarely on OU’s side. From there, Blaylock tacked on scoring runs of six and 18 yards, and the rout was on.

Mateer, the former Washington State transfer making waves nationally, threw a six-yard touchdown to Xavier Robinson in the second half before putting the exclamation point on the night with his 51-yard sprint to the end zone. He now leads the nation with at least one rushing and one passing touchdown in nine straight games.

The Sooners’ defense matched the offense’s intensity, suffocating the Owls with just 26 yards rushing while allowing only 254 passing yards through three games this season.

Takeaway: Oklahoma used the Temple matchup as a tune-up between a gritty win over No. 15 Michigan last week and a Top 25 showdown looming next weekend.

Up next: The Sooners return home to Norman next Saturday for a marquee clash against No. 24 Auburn at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. on ABC.
