“Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”
Jesus preaches a challenging gospel, and He wants us to know the cost of discipleship.
In understanding this passage, it is helpful to understand the impact of His words. The people were being called into a relationship with God that would cause them great difficulty. Many would lose their jobs, families and even lives to follow Jesus. When we put faith first and live as Jesus called us to live, it will create tensions between us and our families. The word translated for hate in this passage can also mean to make inferior. Jesus is not calling us to violate the fifth commandment, but to make every other relationship inferior to one we have with Jesus.
We are called to a higher purpose and plan. Not everyone will support or understand it. If you follow Christ, it will cost you. It is more than worth it, but it is not cheap.
