To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” John 8:31-33 Jesus was not inviting people to a new philosophy or teaching but to know Him. Jesus claimed not just to tell the truth but to be the truth itself. Jesus exposes us to the blindness of the people. They cannot see that they are slaves, not to a human master but sin itself.
Jesus opposed the common philosophy and beliefs of His day and our own.
Jesus offered life and hope to people who thought they already earned it. They could not see that they were trapped in their own pride and self-righteousness.
The blessing of knowing Jesus is to know that we don’t have to earn it.
Jesus did that – we receive it by faith in Him. If you are reading this today and do not have a Church to call home, we would love to meet you at FBC Eufaula!
