An unidentified woman in her 70s had a brush with death on Dec. 15 when the golf cart she was driving ended up in the lake at Xtreme Resort.

Police Chief David Bryning said the woman and her pet dog were in a fully enclosed golf cart on a ramp near Xtreme Bar & Grill when she apparently became distracted and the cart went into the lake.

It took about 20 minutes to free the woman, who was in danger of drowning.

Bryning said a witness jumped into the water and held the cart up while others freed her.

She was taken to McAlester Regional Medical Center, suffering from hypothermia.

Her pet did not survive.
