Mary Margaret (Pyle) "Babe" Carey
Mary Margaret (Pyle) Carey, a.k.a. Babe, was born in Eufaula, Oklahoma on September 15, 1935 to Luther Alden and Margaret Catherine (Turner) Pyle. She departed this life January 13, 2019 surrounded by family.
Married to James Ernest Carey on April 10, 1954, they had four children: Lynn, Scott, Lisa and Stacy.
With a life dedicated to family and being a great cook and party planner, Mary Margaret regularly hosted family 4th of July parties, Christmas and Thanksgiving celebrations.
During her early family time, she decorated and prepared Christmas tins of homemade treats for the children’s teachers and as Brownie Scout leader led crafts, activities and outings to earn badges.
Walks to the neighborhood pool were common summer activities, as were weekends at their Cedar Crest cabin.
Football booster club activities included cam-pouts and canoe trips.
When Eufaula lake was filled, Mary Margaret spent hours in the lake teaching all her kids and their cousins to water ski.
Her home was continually filled with music like Frankie Laine, The Limelighters and children’s classics.
When grandchildren arrived, they went swimming in the cove and “adventuring” to find gold-covered chocolate “treasure” buried on the beach.
When not entertaining the “troops,” Mary Margaret could be found cooking, planting and harvesting food and flowers from her ample garden.
A brisk game of dominoes at afternoon coffee occurred often at family homes.
In later years, she assumed the role of family historian, traveling to the Virginia plantation “Greenfields,” and enlisted family members on heritage research trips to other states.
She and James were owner/operators of Portrait Center and Pic Photo in Tulsa for many years, operating the Braggin’ Wagon, doing high school senior portraits, livestock photography, sports team pictures and photo packages.
As a member of Yale Avenue Christian Church in Tulsa, she taught Bible studies, Sunday School classes and Vacation Bible Schools.
Upon moving back to Eufaula, Mary Margaret played piano and organ at Eufaula Christian Church until the church closed and then became a member at Lake Eufaula Christian Church.
Mary Margaret is survived by her children, Lynn and Greg Michael of Claremore, Scott and Kathy Carey of Eufaula, Lisa and Jerry Jarosik of Columbia, Missouri, Stacy Kennedy of Broken Arrow, and sister Beverly Ann (Jerri) Collie of Eufaula.
Surviving in-laws are Gloria and Forest Allison of Sun City, Arizona, Ricky Bart Carey, of Wagoner, and Helen and John King, of Peoria, Arizona.
She also is survived by nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren: Justin and Audrey Michael with Alexis, Emma and Isabella; Jennifer Vargas with Morgan and Lucas; Sean Michael; Heather Foster and Riley; Andrea and Aaron Hayes with Madison and Ella; Rachael and Dan Malone with Edie and Maeve; Chelsea Boudreau; Kate and Matthew Puschell with Theo; and Carey and Jacob Lewis.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, brothers Kirk and Dick Pyle, grandson Nicholas Michael, son-in-law Jud Kennedy and Joe Foster (granddaughter Heather’s spouse).
A memorial service will be held at Lake Eufaula Christian Church at 11 a.m. on February 23, 2019.
