Debra Jo (Taylor) Potter

March 23, 1967 – September 5, 2019

Memorial services for Debra Jo (Taylor) Potter, 52, of Checotah, OK, were held Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Eufaula Church of Christ in Eufaula, Oklahoma. Reverend Charlie Bailey officiated.

Debra was born March 23, 1967 in Norman, Oklahoma to Carmin Carter and Cerelda Gertrude (Hester) Taylor. She departed this life on Thursday, September 5, 2019, surrounded by her loving family in Checotah, Oklahoma.

Debra lived in Moore, Oklahoma with her family until she was in third grade, when the family moved to Eufaula. She was a straight-A student, and played basketball at Eufaula High School, where she graduated in 1985.

On February 13, 1988, she married Steven Byron Potter at the First Christian Church in Langley, Oklahoma. They lived in Moore, Oklahoma for 25 years, until May 20, 2013 when an F-5 tornado destroyed their home. They then relocated to a small acreage southeast of Checotah. Debra enjoyed reading, crafts, gardening, cooking and most of all, taking care of her husband, children and grandchildren.

She took great pride in canning and preparing for holiday meals, often baking at least 12 different kinds of cookies each year. Debra, with her husband and two friends, started a canine search and rescue team.

Debra filled many roles on the team, including secretary, finance officer and team leader.

She also worked Ace, her black German shepherd, for many years in live finds and cadaver searches.

She is survived by her husband, Steven Potter, Sr. of Checotah; sons, Steven Potter II and wife, Charlotte of Bellevue, Neb., and Joseph Potter and wife Samantha of Checotah; daughter, Kassandra Walker and husband, Justin of Warner; grandchildren, Brian Potter of Bellevue, Neb., Annabelle Potter of Belleview, Neb., Haley Potter of Checotah, Taylor Potter of Checotah, and a grandson on the way, Carter Lane Walker; brother, Carmin Taylor, Jr. and wife, Tammi of Neosho, Mo.; sister, Rebecca Helms and husband, Rodney of Eufaula; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carmin and Trudy Taylor; and grandparents, Pleasant and Ruth Hester and William and Maureen Taylor.

Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to your local animal shelter.

Arrangements and services were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home, Sperry.
