A local volunteer group dedicated to giving animals a second chance received special recognition Monday night as the City of Eufaula issued a proclamation, highlighting its impact on the community.
During the April 6 City Council meeting, Mayor James Hickman presented a proclamation recognizing Paws N’ Claws and declaring April 30, 2026, as National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day in the City of Eufaula.
Lori Powell-Fells and LaDonna Rhodes were recognized for spearheading the organization and making big changes in McIntosh County along with their group of volunteers that have the same passion.
Volunteers continue to play a vital role in animal rescue efforts across the county, dedicating countless hours to caring for, transporting and advocating for animals in need. From organizing adoptions to providing foster homes and medical support, their compassion and commitment make a lasting difference. Their work not only helps save lives but also strengthens the connection between the community and the animals they serve, highlighting the powerful impact of volunteerism.
The public recognition comes as the volunteerdriven organization continues to play a vital role in supporting the city’s animal shelter, helping connect pets with families and expanding community awareness around adoption.
According to the proc-lamation, Paws N’ Claws has helped rehome nearly 100 dogs, giving them “safe, loving homes and a second chance.”
Mayor Hickman praised the group’s dedication and the ripple effect their work has created throughout the community.
“Animal shelters play a vital role in protecting the health, safety, and welfare of both animals and the community,” the proclamation states, noting that adoption not only saves lives but “enriches the lives of individuals and families by providing companionship, loyalty, and joy.”
Mayor Hickman also highlighted the importance of volunteers, foster families, and community supporters, emphasizing that their efforts ensure animals receive proper care and adoption opportunities.
City leaders encouraged residents to take part by adopting, fostering or volunteering, reinforcing that the success of efforts like Paws N’ Claws depends on continued community involvement.
For volunteers, the recognition reflects what can happen when a community comes together for a shared cause and for the animals now in loving homes, living their best lives.
