“If You Hopped Like a Frog” by David M Schwartz is not a picture book that tells a story about a frog. Instead, its 32 pages feature pictures of all kinds of animals, insects, and weird creatures— along with unusual information about each.
Readers will learn that a frog can jump 20 times its body length and an ant can lift an object 50 times its own weight. When each ratio and proportion is compared to the human body: Wow! You could jump from home plate to first base in one leap, and imagine what you could lift if you could lift 50 times your own weight.
Story Walk explorers will have fun with these delightful comparisons, and serious math buffs will feast on the book’s final pages, which show how these fascinating ratios are measured. Be sure to look for the code word and report it at the library’s circulation desk to receive a prize.
The Friends of the Eufaula Memorial Library started the Story Walk with co-sponsors: the Eastern Oklahoma Library System, the Oklahoma Tribal Engagement Partners, the Muscogee Nation, and the Muskogee (Creek) Nation Diabetes Program.
It is south of the beach on the east side of Lake Eufaula. Parking is available just before the first display case. Danielle Burchfield updates the Walk every month for the Friends, and many walkers have joined the Friends to encourage more such cultural contributions for the community. Membership forms, available at the library’s check-out desk, can be filled in and deposited with $5 yearly dues in the box also at the spot.
Members receive email notice of all upcoming Friends’ events, which include special speakers on the third Friday of every month.
