Caleb Knight: From Oklahoma to professional baseball
By RODNEY HALTOM HALTOM?S HUDDLE

Caleb Knight is an American professional baseball player best known for his time as a catcher in the Chicago Cubs organization and their minor-league system. Born on January 2, 1996, in Checotah, Knight stands 5 ft. 10 in. tall, weighs around 220 lb, bats and throws right-handed, and has built a reputation for his toughness behind the plate and his leadership on the field.

Early life and high school success

Knight grew up in Checotah, where he excelled in multiple sports at Checotah High School. As a baseball player, he earned three All- Big 8 Conference honors and was recognized for his defensive ability. But he didn’t limit himself to the diamond: in football, he was a standout quarterback and linebacker, passing for over 2,000 yards and rushing for more than 1,000 in his senior season. Knight’s athleticism, leadership, and work ethic made him a respected figure among teammates and coaches alike.

College career and development

Knight’s path to professional baseball included a stop at Connors State College before transferring to the University of Virginia. At Connors State, he posted a breakout season with a .404 batting average, 12 home runs, and 67 RBIs, and earned the Spaulding NJCAA Division I Defensive Player of the Year award along with an ABCA Rawlings Gold Glove at catcher.

At Virginia, Knight continued to contribute behind the plate and at the plate. In his final collegiate season in 2018, he started the majority of games, was placed on the initial watch list for the prestigious Johnny Bench Award (given to the top collegiate catcher in the country), and showed his versatility by also spending time at first base and designated hitter spots.

Professional career

After college, Knight signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Cubs on July 11, 2018. Over the next several seasons, he became a mainstay in the Cubs’ minor league system, spending time with teams such as the Iowa Cubs (Triple-A), Tennessee Smokies (Double- A), and South Bend Cubs (High-A).

Throughout his professional career, Knight has been valued for his defensive skills, gamecalling ability, and clubhouse presence. His offensive numbers have been solid, and he has delivered key hits and home runs at different stops in the minors. As of late 2025, Knight elected free agency after several years in the Cubs’ system, making him available for other professional opportunities. Off the field

Beyond baseball, Knight has maintained a presence on social media where he shares his journey, training, hunting and personal reflections. His story of perseverance, from small-town Oklahoma to professional baseball, resonates with many young players who dream of playing at the next level.

Knight has always been a dedicated athlete and loving son and brother.
