“How the Bunny Hopped Into Easter” will be the topic explored at the 1 p.m. Friday, March 20 meeting of Friends of the Eufaula Memorial Library.
Popular historian and superb researcher Roger Thompson will explain the significance of the month of April and how cute little bunnies became associated with Christianity’s most significant holiday. His colorful slide show will be presented in the library’s Follansbee Room.
Recently retired from teaching history at Eufaula High School, Thompson is as well known for traveling as he is for his expertise on the past. Both his traveling and extensive research contribute to his unique approach to the Easter topic.
In 1982 he started traveling to expand his high school students’ knowledge of history beyond the classroom. He has traveled with as few as ten students and as many as 60 who went with him to Italy.
He describes his tours, which were for education, not vacation, as “not spring-break type things.” Their popularity is evidenced by EHS graduates who come back for trips well into their adult years, many bringing their children, and later grandchildren.
Future trips, he promises, will be announced to the public and opened to people interested in educational journeys.
Thompson will speak after a very brief business meeting updating members on how the Friends continue to support the library. His speech will be the third of twelve 2026 free, inspiring programs arranged by the Friends for Eufaula’s enlightenment. The roster of upcoming 2026 programs will be available, most on the third Friday of the month.
Membership forms will be also available for anyone desiring to join and participate in helping the Friends enhance the cultural landscape of the community. Yearly dues of $5 entitle members to email announcements of all Friends’ events and encourage volunteers to help the Friends encourage appreciation, understanding, and enjoyment of the library’s educational facilities.
