McIntosh County Commissioners call Special Election on sales tax renewal
By Shauna Belyeu General Manager,

McIntosh County voters will head to the polls June 16 to decide whether to renew an existing county sales tax used to fund roads, bridges and county facilities.

The McIntosh County Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution during its regular meeting March 9, authorizing a special election to allow voters to consider extending the current one-half of one percent county sales tax.

If approved by voters, the no tax increase measure would continue for 15 years, expiring Dec. 31, 2041, and would not increase the current rate.

County officials said the measure is intended to continue funding improvements to county infrastructure and facilities.

Under the proposal, the tax revenue would be split between two major purposes. One-fourth of the revenue would be used for improvements and maintenance of county buildings, while the remaining one-fourth would be dedicated to improvements, maintenance and con- struction of county roads and bridges.

The special election will be conducted by the McIntosh County Election Board and will follow the same polling locations used for regular county elections. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on election day.

If voters approve the measure, the renewed sales tax would take effect Dec. 31, 2026, continuing funding for county capital improvements and infrastructure projects for the next 15 years.

County officials noted that the tax would remain at its current level and would simply extend the existing levy rather than creating a new tax.

Election results will be canvassed and certified by the McIntosh County Election Board before being reported to county commissioners.

The resolution and proclamation were signed by the chairman of the McIntosh County Board of Commissioners and attested by the county clerk following the vote.
