Eufaula Elementary School students are bringing a beloved storybook character to life, one adventure at a time.
As part of an integrated learning project in Ms. Gilley’s class, students recently read Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. The story follows Stanley Lambchop, a young boy who is accidentally flattened by a bulletin board but soon discovers that being flat allows him to travel in unique and exciting ways. Inspired by Stanley’s adventures, students created their own “Flat Stanley” characters and sent them out to visit friends and relatives across the country.
The goal of the project is to help students learn about different places and experiences in a handson way. Each host family shares Stanley’s journey, giving students a glimpse into new communities, landmarks, and events.
One such adventure took place this past Saturday, when Flat Stanley traveled to participate in the Green Run. Accompanied by Jeremy and Kimberlee Little, Stanley experienced the excitement of race day, joining the crowd and taking in the energy of runners and spectators alike. Though flat, Stanley proved he could still be part of a meaningful community event focused on fitness, perseverance, and fun.
The timing of Stanley’s travels is especially meaningful, as students are sending him out during spring break. Each journey offers a new story to share when students return to the classroom, helping bring geography, storytelling, and realworld connections together.
Ms. Gilley and her class look forward to hearing all about where Flat Stanley has gone and what he has experienced. From local events like the Green Run to destinations far beyond Eufaula, Stanley’s travels are turning reading into a real-life adventure.
