Loneliness drains us, leaving us feeling empty and cut off from others. It’s a painful experience because we’re created as relational beings. We need other people for support and companionship. So, when these are missing, we feel isolated, empty, and sad. It has been said that loneliness has the same effect on mortality as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Loneliness was the first thing God said was not good. The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18. If you are lonely, you are in good company.
David knew loneliness – Psalm 27:7-10 Paul knew loneliness – 2 Timothy 4:9-10a. Jesus knew loneliness – Isaiah 53:3 You can look at loneliness two ways – it can lead you into bitterness and hopelessness or it can move you into a deeper relationship with God.
David who experienced great loneliness and abandonment also wrote this – “Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him! Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land.” Psalm 68:4-6 We want to welcome you home to First Baptist Church and help you move from loneliness into a rich community of people who seeing to love God and each other.
