Ruth and Boaz: A divine meet-cute

If you survived Valentine’s Day on a steady diet of romantic comedies, you probably witnessed a classic “meetcute.” That’s the moment when two unlikely characters collide in an unexpected, slightly awkward way—and the audience begins rooting for love. Ruth chapter two gives us a barleyfield meet-cute, written not by Hollywood, but by heaven.

Ruth had walked away from Moab’s false gods and pledged loyalty to Naomi, declaring, “Wherever you go, I will go… Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.” (Ruth 1:16). Now in Bethlehem, she is a poor widow gleaning leftover grain, trusting God one weary step at a time. God had commanded landowners to leave the edges of their fields for the needy (Leviticus 19), weaving generosity into everyday life. Provision would come through humble work.

Ruth “just so happened” to glean in the field of Boaz (Ruth 2:3). There are no burning bushes here—just providence. God works through ordinary circumstances to accomplish extraordinary purposes. As Romans reminds us, “We know that God works in all things for the good of those who love him.” (Romans 8:28). What looked like a coincidence was careful orchestration.

Enter Boaz, a “man of standing.” His first recorded words are a blessing: “The LORD be with you!” (Ruth 2:4). That tells you something about his heart. When he notices Ruth, he doesn’t exploit her vulnerability; he honors her. He protects her from harm. He provides water and food. He even prays over her: “May the LORD… under whose wings you have come to take refuge, reward you fully.” (Ruth 2:12). This meet-cute is not about butterflies; it is about character.

Ruth is equally considerate. She works hard, gathers what she can, and carries leftovers home to Naomi. Love here is not flashy; it is faithful. In a lawless era when “everyone did as they saw fit.” (Judges 17:6), Boaz and Ruth quietly live differently. Their kindness reflects the very heart of God.

God still writes meetcutes like this—not always romantic, but always redemptive. He meets us in ordinary fields when we show up in faith. Jesus proved the ultimate consideration by giving His life for ours.

If you’re ready to see how God might be writing your next chapter, join us at LECC, 415897 Highway 9, Eufaula— small group Bible study at 10 a.m., worship at 11 a.m., and Wednesday night all-age activities at 6:30 p.m. Come experience more than a meet-cute. Come meet the Author of redeeming love.

God Bless You. Jeremy Little, Minister
