“The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs” is now displayed on the Story Walk south of the beach on the east side of Lake Eufaula. It is a humorous, fractured fairy tale told from the perspective of the wolf known as the Big Bad Wolf for huffing and puffing and blowing down pigs’ houses—and worse.
The wolf claimed he was framed and that a bad cold and a desire for sugar were the real culprits behind the pigs’ unfortunate deaths. He claims he was trying to borrow a cup of sugar for his granny’s birthday cake, and the pigs were very impolite.
The story by Jon Scieszka, illustrated by Lane Smith, was recently placed into the plexiglass cases lining the waterfront walking path. Danielle Burchfield, who updates the Walk for Friends of the Eufaula Memorial Library, urges readers not just to enjoy the story, but also to find the code word. Those who report the code word at the library’s circulation desk will receive a prize.
The Friends started the Story Walk with cosponsors, the Eastern Oklahoma Library System, the Oklahoma Tribal Engagement Partners, the Muscogee Nation, and the Muskogee (Creek) Nation Diabetes Program.
Parking for the Story Walk is available just before the first display case. Walkers who enjoy it are invited to join the Friends to encourage more such cultural contributions for the community. Membership forms, available at the library’s check-out desk, can be filled in and deposited with yearly dues of $5 in the box also at the spot.
Members receive email notice of all upcoming Friends’ events, which include special speakers on the third Friday of every month.
