Seven-year-old Brynleigh Anderson is being celebrated as a hometown hero after her quick thinking and calm actions helped save her mother’s life during a medical emergency on Interstate 40 near Checotah.
The first grader at Eufaula Elementary School, was on her way home from a doctor’s appointment with her mother, Jesseca Garrett, when Garrett began feeling unwell and passed out behind the wheel. With her mother unconscious, Brynleigh jumped into action, maneuvering the vehicle safely off the interstate, stopping on the shoulder and then calling 911 for help. The timely call and precise details Brynleigh provided allowed first responders to locate the vehicle quickly and render assistance.
Troopers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol noted how impressive it was that Brynleigh used roadside markers and signs to give dispatchers an exact location, helping emergency crews reach them more rapidly.
“I knew I had to help my mom, because she couldn’t do anything,” Brynleigh said.
Brynleigh was presented with a “Life-Saving Award” at school in front of classmates, teachers and community members who applauded her bravery.
For Brynleigh’s mom, it was more than just a quick response.
“She’s my saving grace and my hero, I’m so thankful she was with me that day.”
For a seven-year-old whose day began like any other, Brynleigh’s actions that afternoon made a difference no one will forget.
