The Eufaula Lady Ironheads redeemed themselves against rival Checotah Lady Wildcats 40-29 in the first round of the Checotah Crossroads Classic on Wednesday.It was a game of high intensity as both teams played each other on Tuesday with Checotah being the victors.
Checotah suffered a huge loss when senior Shyanne Madewell suffered a season ending injury (ACL) in the first period. Madewell led the team in scoring throughout the season and Kalleigh York suffered a concussion.
Eufaula took advantage of the situation as they outscored Checotah 10-4 to end the first period. Checotah would not go away easily as Addie Britt and Logan Dowdy kept the Lady Wildcats in the game with great defense and assists.
Checotah outscored Eufaula 6-4 to end the first half trailing just 1410.
The Lady Ironheads came out the third period focused on shooting from the perimeter and they did just that as Johna Bumgarner and Hannah Needham and Bumgarner both hit long shots to end the period 23-21. It was a battle with York, Britt and Carr playing stout defense but turnovers were a huge factor in the game.
Eufaula forced multiple turnovers and scored in transition. Ava Neill, Olivia Hamby,Lauren Gray was tough in the paint while Ayana Seirs, Bumgarner and Needham scored from the arch as Eufaula outscored the Lady Wildcats 17-7 to seal the tournament victory.
Addie Britt led Checotah with 12 points, Dowdy eight and Carr finished with six points.
Bumgarner led Eufaula with 12 points, Hamby and Gray each had seven points.
