Freshman heroics lift Dewar to back-to-back state titles
By Rodney Haltom sports EDITOR,

Traber Jones didn’t expect to take a snap Thursday night, but the Dewar freshman became an instant legend.

When starting quarterback Peyton Kilhoffer went down with a knee injury late in the second quarter of the Class B1 state championship rematch against Laverne, Jones stepped in cold… and immediately caught fire.

On his very first throw, he delivered an 11-yard strike to JoJo Waters for the touchdown. On his second, he zipped a 2-point conversion to the same target, giving No. 1 Dewar a 14-6 halftime lead — and the Dragons never looked back.

Dewar’s defense slammed the door the rest of the way, shutting out No. 2 Laverne after the break to clinch backto- back titles and the program’s third gold ball since 2020. The Dragons (12-2) also extended their winning streak to nine straight.

Braelin Jones powered the offense with 152 rushing yards and a touchdown, while the freshman QB finished 6-of-7 for 104 yards in a fearless relief performance.

Laverne threatened multiple times, driving twice inside the Dewar 15, but the Dragons’ defense rose up with two huge fourth-down stops, including the game-sealer in the final minutes.

Statistically, Dewar dominated with 356 total yards to Laverne’s 236 and didn’t punt once.

A freshman stepped in. A veteran defense held strong. And the Dragons left Edmond with another championship trophy, proving once again why Dewar rules Class B1.
