USEFUL AND SCIENTIFIC
One hundred years ago not a pound of coal, not a cubic foot of illuminating gas had been burned in this country. No iron stoves were used and no contrivance for economizing heat employed until Dr. Franklin invented the iron framed fireplace which still bears his name.

– Josepha Peters, an Indian woman who was supposed to be over 124 years old, died at San Luis Rey, San Diego County, Cal., on the 23rd.
– An electric spark pen, for producing engravings on copper or zinc, has been invented by a Parisian.
– The mayor of a Georgia town, so young that it possesses no jail, had two prisoners put under a wagon box turned upside down on the ground, and secured them by placing two cotton bales on top.

PRESIDENT IS FOR SINGLE STATEHOOD WASHINGTON, Oct. 7 – President Roosevelt today declared himself unequivocally in favor of the admission of Oklahoma and Indian territory as one state. An Oklahoma visitor called at the White House to pay his respects and the President at once paid a tribute to the newest of territories.
THE EUFAULA ATHLETIC CLUB GOODS ARRIVES
The outfit for the Eufaula Athletic Club has arrived and the fixtures are being put in. Basketball, handball and tennis games will add greatly to the pleasure of the club members.
The club rooms are going to be fitted up soon, a cozy corner containing pictures, floor pillows, rocking chairs and books will soon be added for the pleasure and convenience of club members.
J.S. Holtwick, president of the club, is the right man in the right place.

SCARLET FEVER AND DIPHTHERIA EPIDEMIC Hanna, Okla., Dec. 6 – A serious epidemic of diphtheria has broken out in the Red Hill vicinity. A rigid quarantine has been made, and the public schools have been closed. A number of cases of scarlet fever are also reported.
MORHART DRUG CO. CHANGES HANDS A business change of much importance was transacted here this week, when Messrs. Homer Blake and Jay Pipkin purchased W.G. Morhart the Morhart Drug and Book Company, the oldest established drug store in Eufaula, Mr. Morhart having opened the business here more than a quarter of a century ago, and ran it continuously with much success up to this week, when the business was turned over to the new owners.
Mr. Morhart is retiring from the drug business so as to enable him to devote his entire time to the banking business.

Lions Assured Eufaula Will Keep Highway G.D. Shepard, who is heading the U.S. Army Engineers survey of the Eufaula reservoir, Wednesday assured members of the Lions Club that they would not lose their railroad or Highway 9 by the Government’s big flood control project. But he left some doubt about the future of Highway 9, admitting that he did not know how it would be routed.
Foley Starts New Business Building
Ground was broken for the foundations of three new business units to be built back of the State National Bank by Marshall Foley, Eufaula business man.
New Director Heads County Welfare Office Miss Dorothy Channel, for the past two years a resident of Antlers, arrived in Eufaula last week to head the McIntosh County Department of Public Welfare with offices in the courthouse.
The new director succeeds Miss Margaret Gwinn, who began a year’s educational leave from the department last Saturday.

Annual Christmas Parade Saturday
December 9 will be a big day and a fun day for all the children of Eufaula and the surrounding area.
Due to the lack of snow, Santa has made arrangements to make use of Eufaula’s big red fire truck.
Christmas Baskets Being Readied For Needy Each year the Eufaula Ministerial Alliance donates a number of Christmas baskets for the needy families in Eufaula. Again this year they are asking for your help in this project.
$22,453.10 Contract Awarded For Sewer Lines to City Industrial Tract Eufaula City Council met in regular session Monday night and approved bids for the sewer improvements to the Industrial tract.
The bid was given to Huddleston Construction for the amount of $22,453.10.

City Passes Special Use Ordinance
The Eufaula city council passed a city-wide special use ordinance Monday night and agreed to meet again Thursday, Nov. 13 to vote yea or nay on an application from two local businessmen.
The application, if approved, would allow Joe Bryce McKinney and Ron Ashcraft to open a restaurant at 205 Forest Avenue.
The ordinance also opens the door for other businesses to apply for special use permits in residentially- zoned areas within the city limits.
Over 1,000 Tour Trail of Terror
Visitors to the first Trail of Terror say they got their monies worth after walking approximately one-fourth mile with goblins, ghosts and scary creatures jumping out every few feet. Over 1,000 participants made the trip, raising $2,052.89 for the McIntosh County Youth and Family Education Center.
Thanksgiving Dinner Plans Underway
The 21st annual Eufaula Thanksgiving Dinner is quickly approaching. The dinner, held at the Community Center on High Street, is sponsored by the Greater Eufaula Area Chamber of Commerce.
